A guide to affordable solar power in Zanzibar: Harnessing the sun’s energy, sidestepping pitfalls

TL;DR: Zanzibar gets around 3,000 hours of sun a year, and solar parts can be imported tax-free. The market is full of bad hardware and scams, so check anyone before you pay. With good parts and a qualified electrician, a system pays for itself in under three years.
A disclaimer first. Solar in Zanzibar has a lot of potential. But the market is also full of people who just want to take your money. Many foreigners and even some locals are flooding the island with bad hardware. One example is a German named Linus Gatterman (or Lino Gattermann, acting as Sunzibar among others). He has been taking payments for solar systems and then not delivering. I am one of those customers. I paid $10,000 to take my home off-grid, and I was left in a difficult situation.
I have put time into teaching people about this before, for example with talks at conferences. If you want to know more, reach out on WhatsApp +13103408213
This guide is here so you can buy solar in Zanzibar without getting burned. You can import good solar parts tax-free. You can find reliable local electricians. And you can get a free consultation before you spend anything.
The short version. Zanzibar has a lot of sun, so solar makes sense here. Importing solar parts tax-free is fully legal and saves a lot of money. The Zanzibar Investment Promotion Authority (ZIPA) supports solar. Watch out for scams and cheap products, and check people before you pay them. Free consultations and support are there if you need help.
Why solar in Zanzibar

Zanzibar gets around 3,000 hours of sunshine a year. That puts it among the sunniest places on Earth. With the right setup you can use the grid a lot less or not at all. You save money and the air gets cleaner.
ZIPA made importing solar parts into Zanzibar completely tax-free. So you can get good equipment for much less than local vendors charge. The import process is also simple and your parts arrive fast.
How to do it

First, learn. Read about the different solar technologies, the parts and how installation works. Free consultations can help you decide.
Then find your parts. Work with suppliers you can trust, from China, Germany or other countries. Make sure the parts fit Zanzibar’s grid and climate.
Import them tax-free. Use forwarding and import companies you trust, so everything stays smooth and legal.
Get a local electrician. Pick someone qualified and experienced, who follows safety standards and does the job right.
Then use your clean power. Most systems pay for themselves within a few years through what you save on electricity.
My offer and prices

I offer free consultations on WhatsApp at +13103408213. I can help you choose parts and with importing, installation and maintenance. I can also send you to good local electricians, and if you want, I can handle the full import and installation for you.
My prices for the new 2024 models are $130 per 1 kWh for high volt solar panels, $1200 per 1 kWh for solar LifePo4 battery storage and $800 per 1 kWh for hybrid high volt solar inverters. Installation and import (tax-free!) depend on what you need.
So check any company or person before you pay them. Go for good parts and a proper installation, so your system lasts and performs. And for a home or a business in Zanzibar, solar is a sustainable and cheap way to get energy.
Does it pay off

Solar in Zanzibar is good for the environment and good for your wallet. The island has plenty of sun, import is tax-free, and you can become independent from the grid, cut your carbon footprint and save a lot over the years.
In my presentation on solar in Zanzibar I went deeper into the technology, installation and maintenance. I said it there and I say it here. Buy good parts, work with suppliers you can trust and hire qualified local electricians. Then your system runs at its best for years.
The part people like most is the money. With the right setup you get your investment back in under three years. The start is cheap because import is tax-free and parts are well priced. The panels produce a lot because there is so much sun all year. Solar systems need very little maintenance, so the cost stays low over time. And electricity keeps getting more expensive, so what you save keeps growing.
There is more to it than money. When you make your own clean power, you no longer depend on changing electricity prices or an unreliable grid. And you help Zanzibar and the planet a bit.
It all starts with learning and making good decisions. Reach out for a free consultation and support. We can do this together, safely, and make your solar investment last for years.
Embrace the sun, embrace the savings, and embrace a brighter future with solar power in Zanzibar.
